As the unspeakable takes place on September 19, 2023, when Ebrahim Raissi, the ultra-conservative President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, addresses the UN General Assembly, democrats and those who believe in universal human rights suffer at seeing the head of a State that murders its own youth invited to this forum.
Iran was one of the signatories of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, but the country was ruled by the Shah of Iran. Let's not forget that as soon as he returned to Teheran and promoted the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khomeyni never stopped fighting against this Declaration. The result is sadly visible today. Worse still: the UN does nothing, and its Secretary-General says nothing, to condemn the repression at play in Iran, at the risk of permanently altering the image of the UN as a defender of human rights.
